How to Get Your First Job on Upwork in 2026
Your first Upwork job is the hardest one. Here is what Upwork requires before you can apply, how to choose jobs a new profile can win, what to put in the proposal, and the 90-day rule most beginners don't know about.
Short answer: Finish your profile to 100% and verify your identity first, because Upwork won't let unverified accounts submit proposals. Then pick one narrow service. Apply early to small, clearly scoped jobs from clients with a real hiring history, and write every proposal about that client's problem. Answer every invitation, since replies cost no Connects. You have 90 days from your first proposal to earn before Upwork sets your profile to private.
This guide uses Upwork's own rules as of October 2026, linked inline, for everything factual. Where we give an opinion, such as which jobs to target or how to price, we say so. Nobody can promise you a first job in a set number of days. Upwork doesn't publish hiring odds for new freelancers, and neither do we.
What do you need before you can apply for jobs?
Three things: a verified identity, Connects, and a complete profile. Upwork may ask you to verify when you first submit a proposal, and you have seven days to do it. Unverified accounts can't submit proposals, accept offers or withdraw earnings. Add tax information and a withdrawal method early too, so your first payment isn't delayed.
- Identity verification. You need a valid government photo ID, and the country on it must match your profile. Your name must match across your ID, withdrawal method and tax info. Your profile photo must clearly show you as you look now (source). If you skip it, active proposals are deleted, their Connects aren't refunded, and your account may be suspended.
- Connects. They cost $0.15 each, and each job post shows how many it requires (source). New users may get a one-time 50-Connect bonus after a first purchase or a Freelancer Plus subscription, plus Connects for onboarding tasks. Details are in how many Connects a proposal costs.
- Tax info and a withdrawal method. You can't add a withdrawal method without tax information, and a new method takes three calendar days to activate (source). Country-specific options are covered in our guides for Pakistan, India, Nigeria, the UK, Australia and the USA.
How do you build a profile that wins a first client?
Make it 100% complete, specific to one service, and backed by work samples. Upwork's own guidance says successful profiles are complete and detailed. Both Rising Talent and Top Rated require a 100% complete profile. With no reviews yet, your title, overview and portfolio carry the entire sale, so write them for one type of client.
Upwork's guide to getting jobs recommends choosing a niche and building a portfolio. If you have no client work yet, it suggests adding past projects or mockups, as long as you label mockups clearly as not paid client work. Our additions:
- Title: name the service and the outcome in the words clients search, not a list of five unrelated skills.
- Overview: open with who you help and with what, then offer proof. Clients skim, so the first lines do the most work.
- Portfolio: three relevant pieces beat ten mixed ones.
For the full method, see the profile optimization checklist. To find the terms clients type, LevelUp's keyword research tool finds the keywords clients search for, and the profile optimizer scores your profile against 12 ranking factors. Both are on the free plan: 100 credits, no credit card.
Which jobs should a new freelancer apply to?
Apply to jobs you can clearly deliver, from clients whose history you've checked. Upwork's checklist before spending Connects covers four things: does the job match your skills, has the client already hired, what do other freelancers say about this client, and how busy the post already is. Upwork adds that applying early can help you get noticed.
The checklist comes from Upwork's Connects article, and the point about applying early comes from its guide to getting jobs. The filters below are our opinion, based on what tends to give a new profile a fair shot:
- Small, clearly scoped work. A defined deliverable lowers the client's risk in hiring someone with no reviews.
- Clients with a payment history and past hires. They know how Upwork works and are more likely to leave feedback.
- Posts that aren't already crowded. A post with many proposals and active interviews is a weak bet for an unreviewed profile.
- Work inside your niche. Each off-niche job weakens the profile you're building.
How many proposals should you send?
Upwork doesn't set a number. Its guidance is to submit only to jobs that closely fit your skills and to spend more time on each proposal rather than applying to everything. Your Connects budget sets the real limit. Our view is that a few tailored proposals a day beat a large batch of generic ones.
A volume target makes sense only once you know your reply rate. Track proposals sent and replies received for two weeks. Then use the Connects cost-per-hire calculator to see whether your problem is volume or quality. Usually it's quality.
What should your first proposal say?
Lead with the client's problem, not your biography. Upwork's proposal flow asks you to describe what you can do, ask questions about the project and suggest next steps. Upwork's own resource guide suggests 100 to 300 words. Answer every screening question and attach profile highlights or work samples that match the job.
From How to submit a proposal: you set your rate or bid, estimate the timeline, write the cover letter, answer screening questions and add work samples. Some posts ask for a video interview with Uma, Upwork's AI, instead of a cover letter. You can edit most of a proposal for six hours after sending, or until the client views it. Upwork also asks you not to keep messaging a client who hasn't responded.
A structure that works for new freelancers:
- First line: repeat the client's actual goal or constraint from the post. It's the first thing they read, so make it about them.
- How you'd do it: two or three concrete steps, in the client's terms.
- Proof: one relevant sample, mockup or past result, linked.
- One question: something that shows you read the brief and starts a conversation.
More examples are in how to write Upwork proposals that win. If you use AI to draft, keep yourself in the loop. Upwork's own proposal screen offers AI tips on your cover letter. Where the real risk lies, in bots that submit for you, is covered in does Upwork ban AI proposals. LevelUp's proposal writer gives you three drafts per job (Professional, Pain Point and Conversational) for about 20 credits. You pick one, edit it and submit it yourself.
How should you price your first job?
Research comparable profiles, then price for Upwork's fee. Upwork suggests checking freelancers with similar skills, the effort the job needs, the circumstances and your own costs. It also warns about clients who push you below your minimum by calling the job easy. The service fee runs 0% to 15% per contract, so gross up your rate before you bid.
Rate factors come from How to submit a proposal; the fee math is in our Upwork fees guide. Our opinion: to lower the risk for a first client, cut the scope (a smaller first milestone) rather than your hourly rate. A low rate is hard to raise with the same client, while a small first milestone that goes well leads naturally to a second one.
What should you do after you're hired?
Deliver what was agreed, keep every conversation and payment on Upwork, and ask for feedback when the work is done. Your first Job Success Score appears after outcomes with two different clients. Rising Talent can come sooner. Moving payments or repeated communication off Upwork before a contract can cost you badges for six months.
- Confirm scope in writing in Upwork Messages before you start.
- Ask for feedback politely when you close the contract. Upwork's guide notes that feedback is optional for clients, so asking matters.
- Offer the next piece of work. Long-term relationships carry extra weight in the JSS. See what a good Job Success Score is.
- Watch for Rising Talent. It needs a 4.8+ average rating and $250 earned in 12 months (or an invitation from Upwork), plus a complete profile, a verified ID and a withdrawal method (source). It also adds 30 free Connects.
What happens if you don't land a job in your first 90 days?
Upwork sets your profile to private, which hides you from client search, if you don't submit a proposal within your first 90 days or don't earn within 90 days of your first proposal. You can still submit proposals, and logging out and back in restores your previous visibility setting. Freelancer Plus members are never set to private.
Source: Why was my profile changed to private? Upwork says it does this to keep search results relevant for clients. The cost to you is that clients can't find you to send invitations, which are free to answer (source). If you pass 90 days without a hire, log back in, narrow your niche further, and rewrite your profile and proposal opening before you spend more Connects.
