How do you withdraw Upwork earnings in Nigeria?

Upwork lists Nigeria (NGN) for Direct to Local Bank, which costs $0.99 per withdrawal and should arrive within four business days. Nigerian withdrawals by this route are limited to $3,000. Payoneer, USD wire and Direct to U.S. Bank are other options. You must add tax information first, and new methods activate after three days.

When you withdraw in naira, Upwork's payment partners convert from US dollars and set the exchange rate, which Upwork says may include a markup. The name on every withdrawal account must match your verified Upwork name. Direct to Local Bank has a 12:00 noon UTC cutoff for same-day processing, and Upwork can trace a payment after eight business days.

Earnings must be available before you can withdraw them. Hourly earnings become available ten days after the billing week ends, on the following Wednesday; fixed-price milestone funds are released five days after the client approves them.

What fees does Upwork charge Nigerian freelancers?

Upwork's Freelancer Service Fee ranges from 0% to 15% per contract and is fixed once the proposal or offer is sent. Nigeria requires Upwork to add 7.5% VAT on that fee, on Connects and on Freelancer Plus. Connects cost $0.15 each. Withdrawal fees are separate: $0.99 local bank, $2.99 U.S. bank, $50 wire.

  • You see the service fee before you submit a proposal or accept an offer.
  • Connects are sold in bundles, and buying them requires a verified billing method.
  • Adding a VAT ID to your Upwork account is optional and does not remove the 7.5% VAT charge.

Can you get Upwork money through PayPal in Nigeria?

Upwork says PayPal is available in many locations but not all, and only shows the methods your country supports under Settings > Withdrawals. In January 2026, Nairametrics reported that PayPal accounts linked to a Paga wallet can receive payments and withdraw in naira. We could not confirm that Upwork offers PayPal to Nigerian accounts, so check your Withdrawals page.

If PayPal is not listed in your Upwork withdrawal settings, Upwork says you need to choose another method. The Nairametrics report did not give fees or limits for the Paga route, so compare it with Direct to Local Bank before relying on it. This section will be updated once Upwork availability and fees are confirmed.

How does Upwork ID verification work for Nigerians?

Upwork asks for a valid government photo ID showing your name, photo, signature, date of birth and address; passports need no address. Accepted types include passport, driver's licence, national ID card and voter ID. The country on your ID must match your profile, and you have seven days to verify or your account may be put on hold.

  • Until you are verified, you cannot submit proposals or withdraw earnings.
  • Your name must match across your ID, your withdrawal method and your tax information.
  • If Upwork also asks for proof of address, use a statement dated within the last six months. The address on your profile must match your ID and the statement. Upload a colour image of at least 200 dpi as PNG, JPEG, PDF or BMP; review can take up to 48 hours.
  • An optional identity badge costs 35 Connects.
  • Upwork's help pages list no Nigeria-specific restriction on creating or verifying an account.

Do Nigerian freelancers pay tax on Upwork income in 2026?

Yes, if you are tax resident. PwC's summary of the Nigeria Tax Act, in force from 1 January 2026, says residents are taxed on worldwide income whether or not it is brought into Nigeria. The first ₦800,000 of taxable income is taxed at 0%, then rates rise from 15% to 25% above ₦50 million.

The Federal Inland Revenue Service is now the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), which confirms that income up to ₦800,000 is exempt and that bands rise to 25%. Non-residents are taxed only on Nigerian-sourced income.

You are resident if any of these apply: you are domiciled in Nigeria; you have a permanent home available; Nigeria is your habitual abode; you spend at least 183 days in any 12-month period there; you have substantial economic or immediate family ties; or you are a Nigerian diplomat abroad.

The Consolidated Relief Allowance has been removed. In its place is rent relief of 20% of annual rent paid, capped at ₦500,000. Deductions for pension, NHF, life insurance and owner-occupied mortgage interest remain, and all need documentary evidence. Interest on foreign-currency domiciliary accounts is no longer exempt.

Where do you register and file as a self-employed freelancer?

Personal income tax for most individuals is collected by the state internal revenue service where you live; FCT residents are assessed federally. You need a 13-digit Tax ID, which you can retrieve with your NIN at taxid.nrs.gov.ng. Lagos told self-employed people to file 2026 year-of-assessment returns by 31 March 2026 through etax.lirs.net.

  • The Tax ID is issued jointly by the NRS and the Joint Revenue Board. It must be quoted on all tax forms and payments, and since 1 January 2026 a valid Tax ID has been needed for many public and private services, including banking.
  • NRS says individuals file through NRS or the state internal revenue service where they reside.
  • Filing deadlines are not stated the same way by every source, so confirm the date with your own state internal revenue service.

Is VAT due on services you export through Upwork?

The Nigeria Revenue Service lists exported goods and services among zero-rated and exempt supplies, at a standard VAT rate of 7.5%. That is separate from the 7.5% VAT Upwork charges you on its own fees. Whether an individual freelancer must register for VAT is not settled by these pages, so confirm with NRS.

  • NRS says small companies are exempt from filing and paying VAT, and VAT returns are due monthly by the 21st.
  • PwC notes that a business providing professional services is not classified as a small business.
