Upwork for U.S. Freelancers: Getting Paid, Taxes and Rates

U.S. freelancers on Upwork are domestic taxpayers, so the questions are about getting paid, the 1099-K, self-employment tax, quarterly payments and how U.S.-only job settings work. Every figure below is checked against the Upwork Help Center, the IRS or the Social Security Administration.

How do U.S. freelancers get paid on Upwork?

U.S. freelancers can withdraw to a U.S. bank account by ACH (Direct to U.S. Bank), which is free with a U.S. tax address. Instant Pay sends money to an eligible Visa or Mastercard debit card for $2.00 per transfer. PayPal may also be offered, depending on location. Payoneer is not available in the U.S.

Before you add any withdrawal method, Upwork needs your tax information, which for U.S. persons means a Form W-9. A new method becomes active three days after you confirm it, and the name on the bank or PayPal account must match your verified Upwork name.

Direct to Local Bank is for banks outside the U.S., and Upwork's U.S. dollar wire is for banks outside the U.S. that use SWIFT, so neither is a normal option for a U.S. bank account.

How long does it take to get paid on Upwork?

Hourly work is billed Monday to Sunday, and the earnings become available ten days later, on the following Wednesday. Fixed-price funds clear five days after the client approves a milestone. After that, ACH transfers take two to five business days. Instant Pay usually arrives within minutes, and PayPal can take up to 24 hours.

  • Bonuses are available five days after the client's payment is processed.
  • Automatic withdrawals run only when your balance reaches the threshold you choose, between $100 and $1,000. "Withdraw now" works at any time.
  • A withdrawal that has started cannot be canceled.
  • If an ACH payment has not arrived after five business days, contact Upwork to trace it.

How much does Upwork take from U.S. freelancers?

Upwork charges a Freelancer Service Fee of 0% to 15% per contract. You see the exact percentage before you submit a proposal or accept an offer, and it stays fixed for that contract. Proposals cost Connects, which sell for $0.15 each. Bank withdrawals are free with a U.S. tax address.

Upwork's own example: to net $20 an hour at a 10% fee, charge $22.22. The fee is refunded on amounts you refund. Exceptions to the standard fee: Upwork Payroll and Any Hire (no fee), Direct Contracts (reduced fee) and Enterprise (typically 10%).

Connects are sold in bundles and also pay for boosts and the Availability Badge. You get 30 free Connects for each badge you earn (Rising Talent, Top Rated, Top Rated Plus). Freelancer Plus includes 100 Connects a month and a 0% freelancer fee on Direct Contracts with new clients you bring to Upwork; its price is shown only inside your account.

Upwork may also charge state and local sales tax on what you buy from it (service fees, Connects, membership), based on the tax residency in your account. It appears as a separate line item.

Does Upwork send a 1099 to U.S. freelancers?

Upwork sends only Form 1099-K, not a 1099-NEC or 1099-MISC. For tax year 2025, you get one if clients paid you $20,000 or more before fees across at least 200 transactions, if Upwork withheld federal tax, or if your state has a lower threshold. Either way, you must report all Upwork income.

Clients pay Upwork's licensed escrow subsidiary, which acts as a third-party settlement organization under Internal Revenue Code Section 6050W. That is why Upwork, not your client, reports your payments, and why clients do not send 1099-NECs. Upwork issues a 1099-NEC only in very limited circumstances, and Upwork Payroll employees get a W-2 from the staffing provider.

The IRS wording is that a settlement organization does not have to file unless gross payments to a payee exceed $20,000 and the number of transactions exceeds 200. The One, Big, Beautiful Bill (Public Law 119-21, July 4, 2025) retroactively reinstated that threshold, so the $5,000, $2,500 and $600 thresholds quoted in older articles no longer apply.

Forms can be downloaded from Reports > Tax forms starting January 31, or are mailed postmarked by January 31. If you do not qualify, you will see "There is no 1099-K for this year." Freelancer and agency accounts with the same name and TIN get one combined form.

  • States and districts Upwork currently lists with a lower threshold (the list can change): Arkansas, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey, Vermont, Virginia and Washington, D.C.

Why doesn't my 1099-K match what I was paid?

Your 1099-K shows total payments from clients before Upwork's fees, not what reached your bank. Upwork says the total billed to clients is your income, and the service fees you paid may be deductible business expenses. Use the Billings and earnings report to see billings, fees and refunds for the year.

Upwork lists its fees as line items in the Transactions and Billings and earnings reports, and notes that what you report may differ from the form, for example because of refunds.

How much tax do you pay on Upwork earnings?

Upwork income is self-employment income. If your net self-employment earnings are $400 or more, you file Schedule SE and pay 15.3%: 12.4% for Social Security and 2.9% for Medicare. For 2026, the Social Security part applies to the first $184,500 of combined earnings. Regular federal income tax applies on top.

You report business income or loss on Schedule C (Form 1040). You can deduct the employer-equivalent portion of your self-employment tax when figuring adjusted gross income. An additional 0.9% Medicare tax applies above $200,000 (single) or $250,000 (married filing jointly).

State income tax rules vary and are not covered here, so check your state revenue department.

Do you need to pay quarterly taxes on Upwork income?

Usually, yes, if you expect to owe $1,000 or more when you file. Use Form 1040-ES. For 2026, payments are due April 15, June 15 and September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027. You avoid the underpayment penalty by paying 90% of this year's tax or 100% of last year's, whichever is smaller.

  • If your 2025 AGI was over $150,000 ($75,000 married filing separately), use 110% of last year's tax instead of 100%.
  • You can skip the January 15, 2027 payment if you file your 2026 return by February 1, 2027 and pay the full balance with it.

What Upwork expenses can you deduct?

The IRS allows business expenses that are ordinary and necessary, meaning common in your field and helpful for your business. Upwork says its service and membership fees might be deductible. You may also qualify for the qualified business income deduction, which is up to 20% and is now permanent.

Expenses used partly for personal purposes must be split into business and personal parts. Whether Connects purchases are deductible is not stated by Upwork or the IRS pages we checked, so ask a tax professional.

From 2026, the IRS says that if you have at least $1,000 of qualified business income from an active trade or business, you may be able to claim a minimum QBI deduction of $400, and the phase-in range rises to $150,000 (married filing jointly) and $75,000 (all others).

Can U.S. freelancers avoid competing with lower-priced freelancers abroad?

Partly. When U.S.-based clients post a job, Upwork asks whether to limit it to freelancers in the U.S. or open it to everyone, and they can change that at any time. Clients elsewhere can only list location as a preferred qualification, so freelancers from other countries can still apply.

Upwork gives clients three reasons to limit a job to the U.S.: localized knowledge, the possibility of on-site coordination, and specific compliance needs. The setting can differ from job to job. If you target U.S.-only posts, speak to those reasons in your profile and proposals.

What do freelancers charge on Upwork?

Upwork publishes typical hourly ranges by skill, but they come from historical contracts worldwide, not U.S. freelancers alone. Examples: web developers $15 to $50, content writers $15 to $40, data scientists $35 to $250. Upwork's 2026 research found freelancers doing AI work earn 34% more per hour than others.

Upwork's Future Workforce Index 2026 surveyed 2,400 U.S.-based workers and found skilled freelancing rose from 28% of skilled knowledge workers in 2025 to 38% in 2026. Its In-Demand Skills 2026 report names full stack development, general virtual assistance, data analytics and graphic design as the most sought-after skills; those are demand figures, not pay.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Upwork 1099 or W-2?+
Independent freelancers on Upwork may receive Form 1099-K, not a W-2. The exception is Upwork Payroll: if a client pays you as an employee through Upwork Payroll, you get a Form W-2 from the staffing provider instead.
Do I need to fill out a W-9 on Upwork?+
Yes. U.S. persons must submit a Form W-9 with a valid SSN, EIN or ITIN before withdrawing. Without one, Upwork must withhold federal income tax, you can't withdraw, and your 1099-K could be missing or delayed. If the IRS flags a TIN error, you have 15 days to correct it.
Do I have to report Upwork income if I don't get a 1099-K?+
Yes. Upwork and the IRS both say you must report all income whether or not you receive a Form 1099-K. If you don't meet Upwork's criteria, your Tax forms section will show "There is no 1099-K for this year" from January 31.
Can I use Payoneer on Upwork in the U.S.?+
No. Upwork says Payoneer is not available to freelancers who live in the U.S. or India. U.S. freelancers can use Direct to U.S. Bank (ACH), Instant Pay to an eligible debit card, or PayPal, depending on what shows in their withdrawal settings.
Is there a limit on Upwork Instant Pay?+
Yes. Instant Pay sends up to $2,999 per transfer to an eligible U.S. Visa or Mastercard debit card, and Upwork lists the fee as $2.00 per transfer. Funds usually arrive within minutes. A newly added card becomes active within three days.
Does the QBI deduction apply to Upwork income?+
It can. Sole proprietors may deduct up to 20% of qualified business income. The IRS's 2026 Form 1040-ES says recent legislation made the deduction permanent and, starting in 2026, allows a $400 minimum deduction if you have at least $1,000 of qualified business income.
