Upwork in Australia: ABN, GST, tax and getting paid
What an Australian freelancer on Upwork needs to know about the ABN, GST on Upwork's fees, income tax, what Upwork reports to the ATO and getting earnings into an AUD bank account. Facts are checked against the ATO, business.gov.au and Upwork's Help Center.

Do I need an ABN to freelance on Upwork in Australia?
If your Upwork work is a business, you can get an ABN, and it is free. A hobby is not eligible. Upwork's help pages describe what happens without one: unless you enter an ABN and confirm GST registration, Upwork adds 10% GST to its own fees. Being in business depends on profit intent, repetition and how businesslike you are.
business.gov.au says no single factor decides whether you are in business. It looks at whether you intend to make a profit, repeat similar activities, operate at a scale like others in your industry, and run things in a businesslike way, such as keeping records, using a separate bank account, and having an ABN or a registered business name.
An ABN is not compulsory. A business must declare its income and generally needs an ABN to claim deductions. Hobby amounts do not need to be declared, and hobby losses cannot be claimed. Without an ABN, Australian businesses that pay you must withhold 47%. Upwork's Australian help pages do not say whether Upwork withholds anything.
The ATO says income from providing professional services through a platform is assessable even if it is a one-off payment, and its page on providing services through platforms lists Upwork among the platforms it covers.

Do I have to register for GST on Upwork income?
The ATO's general rule is to register within 21 days once your GST turnover reaches $75,000, and export sales connected with Australia count toward it even though they are GST-free. ATO pages differ on whether digital-platform income must be registered regardless of turnover, so confirm your position with the ATO or a registered tax agent.
GST turnover is measured two ways: current turnover (this month plus the previous 11) and projected turnover (this month plus the next 11). You need an ABN before you can register. The ATO's worked example: $50,000 of domestic sales plus $50,000 of overseas sales is $100,000 of GST turnover, so registration is required.
Where the ATO pages differ: the main "Registering for GST" page (updated 14 September 2026) lists earning income "through the sharing economy or digital platforms" as a case where you must register. The ATO's more specific page on GST for services provided through platforms says to register if your GST turnover is $75,000 or more. We are not stating which applies to Upwork-type services; read both pages and check with the ATO or a registered tax agent before deciding.
Once you are registered, enter your ABN in Upwork under Manage finances > Tax information and confirm your GST registration, and Upwork stops charging GST on its fees. It does not refund GST collected before then.

Do I charge GST to overseas Upwork clients?
Generally no, if you're registered. The ATO says a service is GST-free when the client is outside Australia and uses it outside Australia. Its own example is a freelance writer working for an English publisher. Work for Australian clients is taxable once you're registered, so record where each client is before invoicing.
The exception to watch: services provided in Australia are not GST-free just because the payer is overseas. Upwork does not charge GST on what you bill clients; its GST applies only to its own fees, membership and Connects.

How much tax will I pay on Upwork earnings?
Upwork income is assessable and taxed at your marginal rate. For 2026-27, residents pay nothing up to $18,200, 15% to $45,000, 30% to $135,000, 37% to $190,000 and 45% above that. The Medicare levy adds 2%. The 15% rate replaced 16% from 1 July 2026. Residents must declare worldwide income, converted to AUD.
Rates below are for Australian residents and exclude the 2% Medicare levy. Worldwide income includes income for services to an organisation outside Australia and payments from overseas-hosted platforms. Temporary residents do not pay Australian tax on most foreign income.
PAYG instalments start automatically for individuals and sole traders when all three apply: instalment income of $4,000 or more on your latest return, tax payable of $1,000 or more on your latest notice of assessment, and estimated tax of $500 or more. Instalments are usually quarterly, and the ATO suggests voluntary entry for people new to business.
| Taxable income | 2025-26 | 2026-27 |
|---|---|---|
| $0 to $18,200 | Nil | Nil |
| $18,201 to $45,000 | 16c per $1 over $18,200 | 15c per $1 over $18,200 |
| $45,001 to $135,000 | $4,288 + 30c per $1 over $45,000 | $4,020 + 30c per $1 over $45,000 |
| $135,001 to $190,000 | $31,288 + 37c per $1 over $135,000 | $31,020 + 37c per $1 over $135,000 |
| $190,001 and over | $51,638 + 45c per $1 over $190,000 | $51,370 + 45c per $1 over $190,000 |

Does Upwork report my earnings to the ATO?
Yes. Under the Sharing Economy Reporting Regime, Upwork says it reports Australian freelancers' earnings and bank details to the ATO, with no minimum amount. Reports cover July to December and January to June. Upwork issues a matching SERR form in AUD each January and July under Manage finances, Tax forms.
The ATO says platform operators report twice a year: by 31 January for July to December, and by 31 July for January to June. Reporting expanded to all other reportable transactions from 1 July 2024, and the ATO's list of task-based services includes digital services such as graphic design, content creation and software development, plus other freelance, contracting or gig work.
Upwork's SERR form shows gross earnings minus refunds, fees including GST, taxes collected, the number of transactions, and your bank, PayPal or Payoneer details. It applies if your tax residence is set to Australia, and missing or invalid tax information pauses withdrawals.

What's the cheapest way to get Upwork earnings into an Australian bank?
Direct to Local Bank in AUD costs US$0.99 per withdrawal, plus incoming fees at some banks, and should arrive within four business days. A US-dollar wire costs US$50. Upwork no longer publishes a list of methods by country, so check Settings > Withdrawals for what you are offered. Any new method takes three days to activate.
Upwork needs your tax information before you add a withdrawal method, and the name on the account must match your verified Upwork name. Hourly work is billed weekly (Monday to Sunday) and becomes available ten days later, on the following Wednesday. Fixed-price and Project Catalog funds are released five days after the client approves.
PayPal and Payoneer: Upwork describes both but no longer confirms availability by country, and says only that PayPal is possibly available. If they appear in your settings, Upwork charges a small per-transfer fee that it does not publish, and both providers add their own charges.
| Method | Upwork fee | Timing | Notes |

How much should an Australian charge on Upwork?
There's no reliable Upwork rate data for Australians specifically. Upwork's global guide puts entry-level work at US$10-$25 an hour, intermediate at US$25-$75, and specialised development, AI and consulting at US$75-$150 or more. Upwork then keeps a fee of 0-15% per contract, so set your rate from the amount you want to keep.
Upwork's own example: to net US$20 an hour at a 10% fee, bill US$22.22. If you have not entered an ABN and confirmed GST registration, add 10% GST on the fee to your sums.
For local context only, PayScale's self-reported data puts the median freelance graphic designer in Australia at AU$47.50 an hour (42 profiles, updated 13 July 2026). On the Outsized consulting platform, Australian day rates run AUD 700-1,500. Neither measures Upwork.
- Highest ranges in Upwork's global guide include machine learning engineers (US$50-$200), data scientists (US$35-$250), contract law (US$30-$200), DevOps (US$40-$100) and business coaches (US$75-$150) an hour.
- The lowest are admin, data entry, chat and email support, and virtual assistants (US$10-$20).
- Upwork says clients commonly hire Australians for software development, digital marketing, graphic design and branding, copywriting, business consulting, video, and finance and accounting. That describes demand, not pay.

When is my tax return due, and what records do I keep?
If you lodge yourself, your return is due by 31 October. Sole traders must lodge even below the tax-free threshold, including the business and professional items schedule. If you use a registered tax agent, they'll tell you when they will lodge. Keep most business records for five years.
Business owners must lodge a return even if the business earned nothing. The five years run from when the record was prepared or obtained, or the transaction completed, whichever is later. Records must show the date, amount, description and GST information, and be in English or easy to convert.
Your Upwork SERR forms and transaction reports are a useful starting point for those records.
