Upwork in India: getting paid, tax and rates for Indian freelancers

How Upwork earnings reach an Indian bank account, why Payoneer is not an option, what Upwork deducts as TDS and GST, how to get a FIRA for your withdrawals, and how the presumptive tax scheme works for professionals. Rates and in-demand skills come from Upwork's own pages, with the limits of each figure spelled out.

How do you withdraw Upwork earnings to an Indian bank account?

Indian freelancers can withdraw to an Indian bank account in rupees using Upwork's Direct to Local Bank method. Upwork charges $0.99 per withdrawal, a new method activates after three days, and funds should arrive within four business days. Alternatives are PayPal or a US dollar wire transfer ($50 per transfer). Payoneer is not available in India.

Upwork asks you to enter your tax information before you can add any withdrawal method, and the beneficiary name must match your verified Upwork name. Direct to Local Bank needs your branch IFSC (11 characters); Upwork warns that a head-office IFSC may delay funds. There is a 12:00 noon UTC cut-off for same-day processing.

Earnings must be available before you can withdraw them. Hourly work is billed Monday to Sunday and becomes available ten days later, on the following Wednesday. Fixed-price milestone payments are released five days after the client approves them.

Can you use Payoneer for Upwork in India?

No. Upwork's help centre says Payoneer withdrawals are available only to freelancers who live outside the U.S. and India. Indian freelancers can use Direct to Local Bank in INR, PayPal where it appears under Settings > Withdrawals, or a US dollar wire transfer. The name on every withdrawal account must match your verified Upwork name.

Older tutorials sometimes show Payoneer as a route for Indian freelancers. Upwork's current Payoneer article lists living outside the U.S. or India as a requirement, so the option does not appear for India-based accounts.

What fees does Upwork charge Indian freelancers?

Upwork charges a Freelancer Service Fee of 0% to 15% per contract, shown before you submit a proposal or accept an offer and fixed once the contract starts. Connects cost $0.15 each. Because India requires it, Upwork adds 18% GST to its fees, Connects and memberships unless you give it a valid GSTIN.

  • Service fee exceptions: Upwork Payroll and Any Hire contracts have no fee, Direct Contracts have a reduced fee, and Enterprise contracts typically carry 10%. The fee is refunded proportionally if the client is refunded.
  • Upwork says the total billed to clients counts as your income, and the service fee may be deductible as a business expense.
  • GST collected before you add a GSTIN under Manage finances > Tax information is not refunded.
  • Connects are sold in bundles and need a verified billing method. Each talent badge (Rising Talent, Top Rated, Top Rated Plus) earns 30 free Connects, up to 90. Connects come back if the client cancels before hiring, not if you are rejected or the job expires.
  • Recurring payments on Indian-issued cards, such as a Freelancer Plus membership, may need an extra authentication step under RBI e-mandate rules. Declined payments are retried and can lead to an account hold.
  • Withdrawal fees come on top: $0.99 per Direct to Local Bank withdrawal or $50 per US dollar wire.

Why does Upwork deduct TDS, and how do you get it at 0.1%?

Indian law requires e-commerce operators like Upwork to withhold TDS from Indian service providers. Upwork withholds 0.1% of your gross billings if you have given it a verified PAN linked to Aadhaar, and 5% if you have not. Upwork emails a quarterly Form 16A (Form 131 under the Income-tax Act 2025).

TDS is calculated on the gross amount invoiced to the client, before the Freelancer Service Fee. PAN verification can take up to seven business days. TDS dates follow invoice dates, not withdrawal dates.

You can claim the TDS as a credit, or get a refund if it is more than your tax, by filing your income tax return. Errors on a certificate go to [email protected] by the dates below.

Do Upwork freelancers in India need GST registration?

Only once your aggregate turnover passes the threshold. Service suppliers with all-India aggregate turnover up to ₹20 lakh (₹10 lakh in Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura) are exempt, even when supplying outside the state. Aggregate turnover includes exports. Exported services are zero-rated; registered exporters file a Letter of Undertaking (Form GST RFD-11) to export without paying IGST.

  • Exports of services are zero-rated inter-State supplies. An exporter either supplies under an LUT without paying IGST and claims input tax credit refunds, or pays IGST and claims a refund.
  • Filing the LUT: on the GST portal, go to Services > User Services > Furnish Letter of Undertaking. File it before the supply, once per financial year; it shows as Expired at year end. It is deemed approved if no officer acts within three working days, and proprietors can sign with EVC or DSC.
  • CBIC's definition of export of services requires payment in convertible foreign exchange. Whether rupees paid out through Upwork's Direct to Local Bank meet that test is a question for your chartered accountant.
  • Upwork charges 18% GST on its own fees to India-resident users who have not saved a GSTIN. Some freelancers register for that reason; discuss whether it makes sense for you with a CA.
  • GST on your own invoice to a client only applies when both you and the client are in India, according to Upwork.

How is Upwork income taxed in India?

Freelancers in a specified profession, such as engineering or technical consultancy, can use presumptive taxation under section 44ADA of the 1961 Act, which the Income-tax Act 2025 moves into section 58. Under 44ADA, income is taken as 50% of gross receipts, for receipts up to ₹50 lakh, or ₹75 lakh when cash receipts are 5% or less.

The specified professions are legal, medical, engineering or architectural, accountancy, technical consultancy, interior decoration, and others notified by CBDT. Many Upwork categories, such as writing, design or virtual assistance, are not on that list, so ask a chartered accountant whether your work qualifies. Under 44ADA you can declare more than 50%, there are no further expense deductions, and books and audit are not required for that profession unless you declare less than 50% with income above the basic exemption.

The Income-tax Act 2025 replaced the 1961 Act from 1 April 2026 and uses "tax year" in place of assessment year. Returns for income earned in FY 2025-26 (AY 2026-27) use the old Act; Tax Year 2026-27, which began on 1 April 2026, falls under the new one, where the new regime moves to section 202 and stays the default. Check the section 58 limits with a CA for income from April 2026 onwards.

Advance tax under the presumptive scheme: the whole amount is due by 15 March, with interest under section 234C if you miss it.

Return form: ITR-4 (Sugam) covers presumptive income for total income up to ₹50 lakh, but it cannot be used by anyone with income from a source outside India, foreign assets or signing authority in a foreign account; otherwise ITR-3 applies. Ask a CA which form fits your Upwork income.

Business and profession taxpayers who want the old regime file Form 10-IEA by the return due date, and can switch back to the new regime only once in a lifetime. Under the old regime the bands for AY 2026-27 are nil to ₹2.5 lakh, 5% to ₹5 lakh, 20% to ₹10 lakh and 30% above, with a rebate of up to ₹12,500 if taxable income is ₹5 lakh or less.

The table shows the Income Tax Department's slabs for AY 2026-27 (income of FY 2025-26) for individuals under 60 under the default new regime. A section 87A rebate of up to ₹60,000 applies if taxable income does not exceed ₹12 lakh. Both regimes add 4% health and education cess.

How do you get a FIRC or FIRA for Upwork payments?

Upwork does not issue FIRCs itself. Contact Upwork Support with the withdrawal's transaction ID, date and INR amount, and Upwork will request a FIRA or NOC from its payment processor, usually within four weeks. The purpose code is fixed at P0103 or P1006. Changes go through your own bank within 30 days of quarter-end.

  • Withdrawals more than two years old may take longer, and some banks can only give a disbursement receipt or NOC rather than a FIRC.
  • Since November 2023, IndusInd Bank issues an "NOC for Issuance of BIRC" (Bank Inward Remittance Certificate), which Upwork says is valid for your bank to issue the FIRC or FIRA.
  • Purpose code changes: ask your AD bank to email IndusInd Bank for an amendment within 30 days of the quarter ending, per RBI timelines. For example, January to March transactions must be raised before 30 April. Upwork no longer helps change the codes.
  • Direct to Local Bank pays in INR, so the FIRA shows rupees. Upwork says to use a US dollar wire transfer if you want funds in USD.

How much do Indian freelancers charge on Upwork?

Upwork's own cost pages put Indian web developers at $16 to $35 an hour (median $25) and Indian app developers at $18 to $39 (median $27), based on historical contracts. Payoneer's 2022 Freelancer Income Report found Indian respondents averaged $26 an hour. No current, India-wide figure covering every category exists.

Upwork describes its cost-page figures as typical hourly rate ranges of certain historical contracts worldwide, and does not say how it defines "Indian". The Payoneer figure is self-reported, covers all platforms rather than Upwork alone, and is four years old; it was up from $21 in 2020, with women at $22 and men at $27.

Which Upwork skills are in demand for Indian freelancers?

Upwork's 2026 In-Demand Skills report, based on 2025 US-originated demand, found the fastest growth in AI video generation (+329%), AI integration (+178%), AI data annotation (+154%) and ecommerce management (+130%). Payoneer's 2022 survey found Indian freelancers in finance ($71 an hour) and marketing ($47) out-earned the global averages for those fields.

The report also lists AI image generation (+95%) and AI chatbot development (+71%) among the fastest-growing skills. It measures demand growth from US clients, not what India-based freelancers are paid, so treat it as a signal of where work is growing rather than a list of the highest-paying skills. In the Payoneer survey, the global averages were $41 an hour for finance and $34 for marketing.

Upwork's India hire page lists the skills clients commonly hire Indian freelancers for: software development and IT, AI and machine learning, virtual assistance and admin support, customer service, cloud and cybersecurity, and content and writing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does an Upwork withdrawal take to reach an Indian bank?+
Once Direct to Local Bank is active, Upwork says withdrawals should arrive within four business days. There is a 12:00 noon UTC cut-off for same-day processing, and a new withdrawal method only becomes active after three days. Upwork can trace a payment after eight business days.
Why did Upwork deduct 5% TDS instead of 0.1%?+
Upwork withholds 5% when it does not have a valid, verified PAN linked to Aadhaar. Add your PAN to your Upwork tax information. Verification can take up to seven business days, after which the rate is 0.1% of your gross billings.
Do I pay GST on Upwork's service fee?+
Yes, unless you give Upwork a valid GSTIN. India requires Upwork to collect 18% GST on its services to Indian users, including the Freelancer Service Fee, Connects and membership fees. Upwork will not refund GST collected before you add a GSTIN.
Can I get Upwork payments in US dollars instead of rupees?+
Yes. Direct to Local Bank pays in INR, so your bank statement and FIRA show rupees. Upwork says freelancers who want USD should add a US dollar wire transfer method, which costs $50 per transfer and can take up to seven business days.
What purpose code does Upwork use for Indian withdrawals?+
Upwork says the purpose codes on the FIRA or NOC are fixed at P0103 or P1006, and it no longer helps change them. Ask your own bank (AD bank) for an amendment within 30 days of the quarter ending, in line with Reserve Bank of India timelines.
When must a 44ADA freelancer pay advance tax?+
A freelancer using the presumptive scheme must pay the whole advance tax by 15 March of the financial year, according to the Income Tax Department. Paying late attracts interest under section 234C. Tax paid by 31 March still counts as advance tax for that year.
