Upwork in the UK: tax, VAT and getting paid
What a UK freelancer on Upwork needs to know about HMRC, Self Assessment, National Insurance, VAT on Upwork's own fees and getting dollar earnings into a pound bank account. Every figure below is checked against GOV.UK or Upwork's Help Center, and the tax year shown is 2026-27.

Do I have to pay tax on Upwork earnings in the UK?
Usually, yes. Freelance work on Upwork is self-employed trading income. If your gross trading income is £1,000 or less in a tax year, you generally do not need to tell HMRC. Above that, you must register for Self Assessment by 5 October after the tax year ends and pay tax on your profits.
The £1,000 figure is the trading allowance. GOV.UK says up to £1,000 a tax year of trading income can be tax-free, and you choose between deducting the allowance or deducting your actual allowable expenses. You cannot claim both.
For example, if your Upwork income is £800 for the year, it sits within the allowance and you generally do not need to tell HMRC. If it is £6,000 and your costs are small, the allowance may give the bigger deduction; if your costs are higher than £1,000, deducting actual expenses may suit you better.
Upwork also asks non-US freelancers to complete a W-8BEN (individuals) or W-8BEN-E form for its US reporting. That form is for Upwork, not HMRC, and it does not replace your own UK tax return.

When do I need to register as self-employed with HMRC?
GOV.UK says you must register for Self Assessment as a sole trader if you earn more than £1,000 in a tax year, which runs from 6 April to 5 April. The deadline is 5 October after that tax year ends. For 2025-26 income, that was 5 October 2026. Registering late could bring a penalty.
The 2025-26 tax year ran from 6 April 2025 to 5 April 2026. If you started earning on Upwork during the 2026-27 tax year (6 April 2026 to 5 April 2027) and go over £1,000, the registration deadline is 5 October 2027.

How much Income Tax and National Insurance will I pay in 2026-27?
Outside Scotland, the first £12,570 is tax-free, then you pay 20% up to £50,270, 40% up to £125,140 and 45% above that. Scotland has its own bands. Class 4 National Insurance is 6% on profits between £12,570 and £50,270, then 2%. Above £7,105 profit, Class 2 counts as paid, so you pay nothing extra.
The Personal Allowance shrinks by £1 for every £2 of adjusted net income over £100,000, so it reaches zero at £125,140. If your profits are below £7,105, you can choose to pay Class 2 National Insurance voluntarily at £3.65 a week.
Scottish taxpayers pay Income Tax at different bands, set out on a separate GOV.UK page; the table below shows the rates for the rest of the UK.

|---|---|---|

Does Upwork charge UK VAT on its fees?
Yes. If your tax residence on Upwork is the UK, Upwork adds 20% VAT to its Freelancer Service Fee, membership fees and Connects purchases. It stops collecting this once you add a valid UK VAT number, starting GB or XI, to your tax information. VAT already collected is not refunded by Upwork.
Upwork's own example: $100 in fees means $20 of VAT on top. A valid UK VAT ID is 9 or 11 characters and starts with GB or XI.
The Freelancer Service Fee itself ranges from 0% to 15% per contract. You see the percentage before you submit a proposal or accept an offer, and it is fixed once the contract starts.

Do I need to register for VAT, and do I charge VAT to overseas clients?
You must register once taxable turnover goes over £90,000 in any rolling 12 months. Out-of-scope sales do not count towards that figure. Under HMRC's general rule, services sold to a business customer outside the UK are supplied where the customer belongs, so they are outside the scope of UK VAT. UK clients are different.
You also have to register if you expect to go over £90,000 in the next 30 days alone. Voluntary registration below the threshold is possible.
- Business clients outside the UK: under VAT Notice 741A, the supply is made where the customer belongs, so it is outside the scope of UK VAT.
- Consumer (non-business) clients: the general rule is where the supplier belongs, so your sales to consumers are generally UK supplies. Some listed services, such as advertising and consultancy, supplied to consumers outside the UK are outside the scope.
- Reverse charge: a UK business that buys services from a supplier outside the UK accounts for VAT under the reverse charge, and a business that is not yet VAT registered must add reverse-charged services to its taxable supplies when checking the threshold. How this works alongside the VAT Upwork already charges on its fees is not settled here, so check it with an accountant.
- Who counts as your customer on an Upwork contract (the client or Upwork) for place-of-supply purposes is also a question for an accountant.

Does Making Tax Digital apply to Upwork freelancers?
It depends on your qualifying income: self-employment and property income before expenses. If that was over £50,000 in 2024-25, you should be using MTD for Income Tax from 6 April 2026. Over £30,000 in 2025-26 means starting on 6 April 2027. Over £20,000 in 2026-27 means starting on 6 April 2028.
Qualifying income is your total self-employment and property income before expenses (turnover), based on the previous year's Self Assessment return. Employment income and dividends do not count.
| Qualifying income | In tax year | Use MTD for Income Tax from |
|---|---|---|
| Over £50,000 | 2024-25 | 6 April 2026 |
| Over £30,000 | 2025-26 | 6 April 2027 |
| Over £20,000 | 2026-27 | 6 April 2028 |

Does IR35 apply if I freelance on Upwork?
IR35, the off-payroll working rules, covers people who work through an intermediary, usually their own limited company, and would be employees if they contracted directly. GOV.UK frames the rules around intermediaries, so sole traders contracting in their own name appear to fall outside them. If you use a limited company, assess each contract separately.
GOV.UK does not say in so many words that sole traders are outside IR35; that reading follows from how the rules are defined. For most clients, the client decides employment status. For small clients outside the public sector, your own intermediary decides. The rules apply contract by contract.
GOV.UK's guidance does not explain how the rules apply when the client is outside the UK. If you trade through a limited company and work for overseas clients, check your position with an accountant.
