Upwork Fees Explained (2026): Service Fee, Connects and Withdrawal Costs

There is no flat Upwork fee anymore. The service fee is set per contract between 0% and 15%, then Connects and withdrawal fees come on top. Here is every cost, what Upwork does and doesn't publish, and the math for your real take-home pay.

Short answer: As of October 2026, Upwork charges freelancers a Freelancer Service Fee of 0% to 15% per contract, which you see before you send a proposal or accept an offer. On top of that you pay for Connects at $0.15 each to apply for jobs, and a withdrawal fee that depends on how you take the money out: $0.99 for Direct to Local Bank, $50 for a US dollar wire, and $2.99 for US bank (ACH) transfers if your tax address is outside the US.

Each of those numbers comes from Upwork's own Help Center, linked inline.

What does Upwork charge freelancers?

Upwork has three costs every freelancer meets: a percentage fee on earnings, Connects to send proposals, and a per-withdrawal fee to move money to your bank or wallet. Two optional costs sit on top: the Freelancer Plus membership and paid ads like boosted proposals. UK and Australian freelancers may also pay tax on the fees themselves.

How much is the Upwork service fee in 2026?

The Freelancer Service Fee ranges from 0% to 15% per contract. Upwork says it sets the fee "based on factors that help support a balanced and competitive environment across different types of work." You see the exact percentage before you commit, and once a proposal, offer or contract is sent, the fee is locked for that contract.

All of this is stated in Upwork's Freelancer Service Fee article. Three practical consequences follow:

  • There is no single "Upwork fee" anymore. Two contracts in the same week can carry different percentages. Check the number on each proposal screen, not a blog post (including this one).
  • The rate is fixed for the life of the contract. A long hourly contract keeps the percentage it started with.
  • You can see it later. The fee appears in your contract details and transaction summaries.

Upwork does not publish which factors push a contract toward 0% or toward 15%, so any article claiming to know the formula is guessing.

How do you work out what you take home?

Divide the amount you want to keep by one minus the fee. At a 10% fee, keeping $20 an hour means billing $22.22 ($20 / 0.90). Upwork uses this exact example and notes that rounding to the cent can move your net by a couple of cents either way. The proposal screen's rate calculator does this for you.

Upwork's worked example: 12 hours at $22.22 is $266.64 billed, the 10% fee rounds to $26.66, and you net $239.98, two cents under the $240 you aimed for (source). If you quote fixed prices, apply the same division to the whole project budget before you send the bid.

Who pays a reduced fee or no fee?

Upwork lists four exceptions. Upwork Payroll and Any Hire contracts carry no Freelancer Service Fee. Direct Contracts, where you bring your own client to Upwork, carry a 5% fee, or 0% if you're on Freelancer Plus. Enterprise contracts typically carry 10%, but the exact rate depends on that client's agreement.

  • Upwork Payroll: no fee, because you're paid through a third-party staffing firm (source).
  • Any Hire: no fee on these negotiated contracts (source).
  • Direct Contracts: 5% of the contract value, so $5 on $100 of earnings, and nothing at all for active Freelancer Plus members (source). You have to start each new contract with that client from the Direct Contracts page to keep the lower rate.
  • Enterprise: "typically" 10%, varying by the client's agreement. Ask your Enterprise contact if you're unsure.

Upwork also says plainly that it offers no regular discounts on the fee, only occasional promotions that it will tell you about if they apply to you.

Do you get the fee back if a client is refunded?

Yes. If money is returned to the client, either because you refunded it or through Upwork's payment protection, Upwork returns the Freelancer Service Fee it charged on that amount. Refunding $100 on a 10% contract gets you $10 of fee back, so you never pay fees on money you didn't keep.

This comes from the refunds section of the fee article. One caution: refunding to avoid a bad review doesn't work the way people hope. We cover that in our Job Success Score guide.

What do Connects cost?

Connects cost $0.15 each and are sold in bundles. Buying them requires a verified billing method, even if you plan to pay from your Upwork earnings. The number needed per proposal varies by job and is shown on the job post. Responding to a client's invitation costs no Connects at all.

Upwork charges your earnings balance first and only uses your card if the balance can't cover the whole purchase; it won't split a payment between the two (source). If you want earnings set aside for Connects, set a reserve balance, which automatic withdrawals leave alone (source).

The full breakdown of per-proposal costs, boosting and refunds is in how many Connects a proposal costs. To see what your Connects cost per reply rather than per proposal, use the Connects cost-per-hire calculator.

What are Upwork's withdrawal fees?

As of October 2026, Direct to Local Bank costs $0.99 per withdrawal and a US dollar wire costs $50. Direct to US Bank (ACH) is free with a US tax address and $2.99 with an international one, a change that took effect on September 1, 2026. Instant Pay costs US freelancers $2.00.

Fees and methods are from How to get paid on Upwork, the wire transfer article, Upwork's PayPal and Payoneer articles, and its Direct to Wallet article. Upwork no longer publishes a per-country list of methods; you see your options when you add one. For country specifics, see our guides for Pakistan, India, Nigeria, the UK, Australia and the USA.

Because most of these are flat fees, fewer and larger withdrawals cost less as a share of what you move. A $50 wire is a big bite out of a $300 balance and a small one out of a $5,000 balance.

How long until your earnings can be withdrawn?

Hourly work is billed Monday to Sunday and becomes available ten days later, on the following Wednesday. Fixed-price milestones and Project Catalog payments clear five days after the client approves. Bonuses clear five days after the client's payment is processed. A newly added withdrawal method becomes active after three calendar days.

You must enter tax information before you can add a withdrawal method at all, and a withdrawal can't be cancelled once it starts (source). Set this up before your first contract ends, not after.

Does Upwork add VAT or GST to its fees?

In some countries, yes. Upwork adds 20% UK VAT to the service fee, membership fees and Connects for UK tax residents who haven't given a valid UK VAT ID. Australians who haven't entered an ABN and confirmed GST registration pay 10% GST on the fee and on Connects. Neither tax is refunded retroactively.

Sources: Upwork's UK VAT article and Australia GST article, both checked on October 25, 2026. If you live elsewhere, check the Tax information section of your account. We haven't verified the rules for every country, so we don't list them.

What does a single job actually cost you?

Take a hypothetical $500 fixed-price job at a 10% fee. The fee is $50, leaving $450. If the post had asked for 16 Connects, the proposal cost $2.40. A Direct to Local Bank withdrawal is $0.99. You keep about $446.61, roughly 89% of the contract value, before any income tax you owe at home.

The bigger hidden cost is the proposals that didn't win. If it took ten proposals at 16 Connects each to land this job, Connects cost $24, not $2.40. That's why reply rate matters more than any single fee line. A higher reply rate cuts your Connects cost per hire directly.

How do you keep more of what you earn?

Price for the fee before you bid, batch withdrawals so flat fees hurt less, bring existing clients through Direct Contracts, and stop spending Connects on jobs you're unlikely to win. The fee percentage is set by Upwork; the number of wasted proposals is the cost you actually control, and usually the largest one.

  • Gross up every rate. Use the division above, or read the net figure from the proposal screen before you send.
  • Pick a withdrawal method by batch size. Low flat fees suit frequent small withdrawals; the $50 wire only makes sense for large ones.
  • Use Direct Contracts for clients you already have. 5% beats the standard range, and Freelancer Plus members pay 0% (source).
  • Write fewer, better proposals. Our proposal writer drafts three versions per job (Professional, Pain Point and Conversational) from the job post itself. You edit and submit. This guide covers the structure.
  • Get found instead of only applying. Invitations cost no Connects, and a profile that ranks for the right searches brings more of them. The profile optimizer scores your profile against 12 ranking factors.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Upwork fee still a flat 10%?+
No. As of October 2026, Upwork describes the Freelancer Service Fee as ranging from 0% to 15% per contract. You see the exact percentage on the proposal or offer screen, and it stays fixed once the contract starts. Enterprise contracts are typically 10%, but that depends on the client's agreement.
Does the client pay the Freelancer Service Fee?+
No. It comes out of your earnings. Upwork charges the client the billing rate you enter and deducts the fee from what you receive. Clients pay their own separate marketplace fees.
How much does Upwork charge to withdraw to PayPal or Payoneer?+
Upwork's Help Center only says it charges a "small" per-transfer fee and shows the amount inside Settings, under Withdrawals. It doesn't publish the figure, so we don't quote one. PayPal and Payoneer may also charge their own fees.
How much does Freelancer Plus cost?+
Upwork shows the price only inside your account, under Membership plan and then Change Plan. The plan includes 100 Connects a month after your first month, a 0% fee on Direct Contracts, proposal insights and a profile that is never set to private for inactivity.
Can I get a discount on the Upwork fee?+
Not a regular one. Upwork says it offers no regular discounts, only occasional promotions it tells eligible freelancers about. The structural ways to pay less are Direct Contracts (5%, or 0% on Freelancer Plus) and the no-fee Payroll and Any Hire arrangements.
